Life Satisfaction Is a Wheel, Not a Pyramid

accountability agency mindset personal development Oct 23, 2026

TL;DR: Using Hollar’s Potter’s Wheel™, a component of her 6-5-10 Model™, a modern alternative to Maslow's pyramid, Nicole Hollar shows why life works more like a wheel than a ladder, and why real change means looking at where an issue is showing up, what's yours to influence, and which resource will move it.

You know the pyramid. Physiological needs at the bottom, self-actualization at the top, and the assumption that once you've got food, shelter, and safety handled, you climb steadily upward until you arrive at your best self and stay there. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs has been drawn on more whiteboards than almost any other model in psychology.

It's also not how change works.

You don't get the promotion and stay fulfilled forever. You don't fix your health and watch every other area of life fall into place. You get the job, and your marriage gets quieter. You finally set a boundary with your mother, and the anxiety about disappointing people shows up at work instead. Life doesn't stack. It moves.

The Happiness Bucket

Most people treat happiness like a bucket with a leak. Something feels off, so they patch the most obvious hole. New job. New gym routine. New relationship. The bucket holds for a while, and then it starts leaking somewhere else, and they patch that one too. Eventually there's a whole bucket covered in patches and it still isn't full.

That's not a willpower problem. It's a mapping problem. You're patching leaks without accounting for the fact that the bucket is one piece of metal, and pressure in one spot changes pressure everywhere else. As I write in the 6-5-10 Model™, “stress at work can affect sleep, energy, food choices, patience and relationships,” and financial pressure can create tension at home that has nothing to do with money on the surface. None of this means everything causes everything else — it means people don't live in compartments, even though most advice is written as if they do.

A Wheel, Not a Ladder

This is the idea behind my 6-5-10 Model™, a simpler way to map a whole, connected life instead of stacking it into levels you're supposed to graduate from.

Six Sectors of Self tell you where something is happening. Not levels. Rooms in the same house:

  • Health & Wellness
  • Career & Finances
  • Personal Development
  • Spirituality
  • Romantic Relationships
  • Friends & Family

Five Principles of Personal Agency known as Hollar’s Potter’s Wheel™, tells you what's yours to influence inside whatever sector is loudest right now:

  • Awareness — I see it.
  • Acceptance — I acknowledge what is.
  • Ownership — I recognize my part.
  • Boundaries — I distinguish mine from yours.
  • Choice — I decide what happens next.

Ten Tenets of Mindset Transformation are the resources you reach for once you know what you're dealing with. Things like: Focus, Confidence & Boundaries, Communication, Wellness, or Purpose.

None of that is a checklist you march through in order. It's a lens. If something isn't working start with the Six and ask where. Move to the Five and ask what's yours. Then look at the Ten and ask which resource may help change it.

Why This Beats Another Patch

Say you keep getting passed over at work. A simple maneuver might be a new resume. But the Five might reveal you've been waiting to be noticed instead of asking to be seen. That's Ownership, not competence. The resource you’ll need might be Communication or Confidence & Boundaries, not another certification or rewrite.

That's the difference between a pyramid and a wheel. A pyramid tells you to master one level and move on. A wheel tells you the parts are touching, and the fastest way to stop losing ground is to figure out which spoke is cracked, not which one is currently the loudest.

You don't need to consciously run all twenty-one components every time something is off. You need to stop assuming the symptom and the source are always the same thing.

Questions for Reflection

  1. Where in your life have you been patching a leak without asking why it keeps reopening, in the same spot, or somewhere new?
  2. Pick a problem you keep “solving.” Is the sector where it shows up really the sector causing it?
  3. What's a resource you've been avoiding (i.e. Communication, Boundaries, Wellness, Focus) because dealing with the obvious symptom feels easier?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 6-5-10 Model™?

The 6-5-10 Model™ is Nicole Hollar's whole-person framework for creating change. It combines the 6 Sectors of Self (where a problem is happening), the 5 Principles of Personal Agency (what's yours to influence), and the 10 Tenets of Mindset Transformation (what resources can help you affect it). It isn't a 21-step formula. It's a way to look at the whole person instead of just the part where a problem happens to show up.

How is the 6-5-10 Model different from Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs?

Maslow's pyramid is sequential: you're meant to secure one level before moving to the next. The 6-5-10 Model™ isn't a ladder — it's a wheel, built on the idea that the areas of a person's life are interconnected rather than stacked. Progress in one sector can support or strain another at the same time, which is why the model looks across all six sectors instead of assuming growth happens in order.

Do I have to work through all 21 components of the 6-5-10 Model?

No. The model is designed to work as a lens, not a checklist. You start with the Six to locate where something is happening, use the Five to clarify what's yours to influence, and then draw on whichever of the Ten Tenets fits the situation. Different problems point to different components.
